Trips of Bulgarian Residents Abroad and Arrivals of Visitors from Abroad to Bulgaria in March 2020
In March 2020, a decline in the trips of Bulgarian citizens abroad and the visits of foreigners to Bulgaria was registered due to the suspension of international flights and the closure of the land borders because of the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
In March 2020, the number of the trips of Bulgarian residents abroad was 230.7 thousand or by 51.8% under the registered in March 2019.
In March 2020, the number of arrivals of visitors from abroad to Bulgaria was 312.8 thousand or by 43.7% less in comparison with March 2019.
Business Conjuncture, April 2020
In the context of state of emergency in the country in April 2020, the NSI business surveys indicate a deterioration of business conjuncture in all observed sectors. The total business climate indicator drops by 41.7 percentage points compared to its level from the previous month, which is with 37.0 percentage points below the long-term average for the last l0 years, and with 4.4 percentage points above the long-term minimum registered in February 1997.
Poverty and Social Inclusion Indicators in 2019
In 2019, the average monthly poverty line for the country is 413.04 BGN average per person. The number of persons who are below this line is 1 586.2 thousand representing 22.6 % of the population.
Activity and condition of accommodation establishments at emergency situation in March 2020
In April 2020, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) has started a monthly inquiry survey of the managers of accommodation establishments to gather accurate and timely information on the state and development of their businesses during the state of emergency. The survey will be conduct monthly until the end of state of emergency in the country.
Situation of the non-financial enterprises in the state of emergency in March 2020

Education in the Republic of Bulgaria for 2019/2020 School Year
- In the 2019/2020 academic year in kindergartens are enrolled 217.9 thousand children or with 0.4% less in comparison with the previous year.
- In 2019, high school graduates from general and vocational schools are respectively 25.8 and 21.6 thousand students.
- In 2019/2020 academic year, 220.2 thousand persons were enrolled in the different tertiary education levels.
- As of 31.12.2019 for acquiring a ‘Doctor’ educational and scientific degree in the country were trained 6 440 persons, of whom 558 foreign citizens.
Anti-Social Acts of Minor and Juveniles in 2019
The number of minors and juveniles registered in the Child pedagogic rooms for anti-social acts and crimes commitment in 2019 was 9 167. In comparison with 2018, their number increased by 69 or by 0.8%.
Bulgaria and EU: Deficit and debt of General Government Institutional Sector for 2019 (preliminary data)
In 2019, the government deficit and debt of the EU-27 increased in relative terms compared with 2018. In the EU-27 the government deficit to GDP ratio rose from 0.4% in 2018 to 0.6% in 2019. In the EU-27 the government debt to GDP ratio declined from 79.6% at the end of 2018 to 77.8% at the end of 2019.
Deficit and Debt of General Government Sector in the Republic of Bulgaria in 2019 (preliminary data)
According to preliminary data of the National Statistical Institute the General Government Institutional Sector reported in 2019 a surplus of 2 470 million BGN or 2.1% of GDP.
The Government Debt of Bulgaria for 2019 is 24 205 million BGN or 20.4% of GDP.
Inflation and Consumer Price Indices in March 2020
The consumer price index in March 2020 compared to February 2020 was 99.4%, i.e. the monthly inflation was -0.6%.
